We always wonder whenever we buy the silk sarees, how to clean and maintain them. Here I am giving you the instructions I found in the KSIC site of the Karnataka Silk Industries Corporation which was very helpful to me. You can also check out. See here, if you like to know where the KSIC showroom in Chennai is located
The customers who have purchased silk fabrics and sarees from KSIC ( Karnataka Silk Industries Corporation ) are requested to take precautions, while handling their sarees to maintain the sarees' s luster and look.
Please do not keep your silk sarees covered in plastic bags. The plastic covers tend to keep the moisture inside which will spoil the silk and Zari. You should always wrap them in clean, soft cloth and please do avoid wool and paper also to store them.
Silk should at best be dry-cleaned but at home you can wash them with soft detergents. Soap nuts / Shikakai boiled in water yields a soft lather, which is best for washing the silk fabrics.
For ironing or pressing them, you could take to the dry-cleaners for having steam-ironingdone. If you are doing at home, never press the saree directly with a hot iron. Keep a thin, white linen cloth or a paper on top of the sarees, while ironing.
Do not use Naphthelene balls for protection against cockroaches and other insects. Use any of the mild repellent available in the stores, instead of naphthalene balls.
You can also expose your Zari part of the sarees to the sun once in a while or at least twice in a year.
Change the folds of the saree frequently to avoid tell-tale marks. It can gather dust and even tear, if one is kept in the same fold constantly.
Protect your sarees against dampness and moisture. But if stained, rub a soft damp cloth on the satin gently and dry immediately.
