How to check for freshness of vegetables

Beetroot:-- Look for the ones with reddish-purple in colour. It should have a rich colour and should be free from broken skin and blemishes.

Cabbage and Cauliflower:
--It should be firm ,small and round.Watch out for the small pores .If there is then the worms have been eating before you. Cauliflower should be one full flower with close flowerettes, should not have discolouration and small pores. It should be looking fresh with fresh leaves around the flower.

Carrots:-- They should of even size, bright orange and smooth, without cracks ,and shouldn't have a shriveled skin.See that it has not been oiled for that look of freshness.

Onions and Garlic; They should be firm with dry skin. When you feel the onions they shouldn't feel squishy. They should be hard and dry to touch. When buying garlic also the skin should be dry and hard to touch. It shouldn't feel soft.They should also look plump for their size.

Potatoes:-- Look for smooth firm varieties. Don't pick dirty, cracked and sprouted ones. Sometimes the green shaded ones create indigestion. So be careful when you buy potatoes.

Tomatoes:-- Buy only the plump , brightly coloured, smooth specimens with no soft spots ,scars or marks. They should be heavy for their size.

Mushrooms:-- Watch out for the mushrooms .there are many varieties .As there are good ones in the market ,there are bad ones also. So choose good ones, clean and firm. It shouldn't be mouldy or dirty. It should look white in colour and when you touch it ,it should be firm and not soft.

Always look for and buy good vegetables and fruits. Almost all of them should be firm and brightly coloured. Grapes when you buy them , if you can ,taste and buy. Sometimes colour also deceives us.It'll be very sour. So be careful when you buy and store them.
